About MOLOKAI COFFEE

The island of Moloka'i, a quiet dash between two boisterous sentences, Oahu and Maui, produces extraordinary premium coffees.
This small island has one 500-acre plantation and mill in the village of Kualapu'u.
It is the only source of 100% Moloka'i coffee, meaning that all other coffee brands that are labeled 'Molokai coffee' originate from this plantation.

Molokai grows red catuai beans, which were selected in the mid 1980's for their superior quality and compatibility with local growing conditions.
These Arabica coffee trees are rooted in the vivid red earth of the central island's upper slopes.

Kualapu'u is the traditional name for this area - 'sweet potato hill'.
The sweet potato - uala - is a staple food of Hawaiian culture, grown just about everywhere that the land was too dry to support taro - kalo.
As the name suggests, this land has been fertile farm country for a very long time.

Malulani Estate  -  Peaceful strength

From ancient times, the Hawaiian island of Molokai has been known as place of great spiritual vigor.
The old legends claim that the people of Moloka'i repelled invading armies simply by harnessing the power of prayer.

The island continues this tradition of quiet self-reliance by now resisting urban modernism -  Not one traffic light on Moloka'i..:)
"Malu" means shade, shelter, and inner stillness.
"Lani" refers to the celestial realm.

The plantation is located in the town of Kualapu'u on Farrington Highway, quite visible from Route 470.
"Highway" means two-lane country road on Moloka'i.

The Malulani plantation also has an Espresso Bar and Deli, a unique gift shop and a self-guided tour display,
which gets you thinking about the history of coffee in Hawai'i as well as introduce you to all the inner workings of their plantation.
A great place to sip specialty coffee!

Molokai is a sparsely populated island off the west coast of Maui.
It has only a couple of resorts, as well as some excellent snorkeling.
They do have a robust coffee farm industry, however.
While the island doesn't have the higher altitudes like Kona, Molokai is capable of producing some very tasty, nutty and sweet coffees.

When the trade winds get squeezed in between the high peaks of the Hawaiian islands, they howl and thrash the sea channels.
Moloka'i faces three of these wild channels. Looking east to Maui - Pailolo. Looking south to Lana'i - Kalohi.
Looking west to O'ahu - Kaiwi. Old-days Hawaiians crossed these channels not in jets but in canoes.
They used hand-hewn tree trunks, vine lashings, bark sails, powerful muscles, and raw courage.
For today's canoe clubs, little has changed.

All Things Muleskinner....

A mule skinner is a worker who drives mules. They are also called muleteers in English and arrieros in South America.
They are commonly referred to as wranglers of pack animals and wear differing outfits like a square wool garment,
a poncho, a straw hat and carry a leather bag.
The North Shore of Moloka'i is an extreme landscape-cliffs that plunge more than 2,000 feet into the crashing sea.
At the bottom of these cliffs, a small peninsula juts like a note thrust under a door.
Only the most courageous of souls know this peninsula and the switchback trail that connects it with "topside" Moloka'i.
For generations now, Hawaiian muleskinners have traversed this terrain on the backs of their sharp-witted, sure-footed mules.

The Molokai original Muleskinner coffee is named for the landscape whose essence it bears.
A natural-dried, dark-roasted bean that's 100% Moloka'i grown.
From freshly harvested overripe coffee cherries that are dried, aged,
and transformed into Muleskinner Coffee and its trademark dark brown taste.

Hula captures the essence of all that is Hawai'i. It echoes the forms of nature-specific winds and mists, peaks and seas.
It also preserves the skills and history of the Hawaiian people. This art form (they say) began here on Moloka'i,
on a sacred hill known as Pu'u Nana. From here it spread throughout the islands, and it continues to lead Hawaiian culture into the future.

"Essence" is the word for this 100% Moloka'i Arabica coffee, to which we've added a graceful dash of premium Polynesian vanilla bean-dedicated to all who follow the spirit of the hula.

The Molokai-grown espresso, made from fine Arabica beans and roasted to a
state of perfect intensity, matches ,we think, the power of those tough-living adventurers.

History of Molokai Coffee and Coffee Production.

In 1980 a group of local businessmen along with some Brazilian consultants set out to look for an ideal location to grow high quality Arabica Beans in Hawaii. After a few years of research throughout the Hawaiian Islands, Kualapu'u, Moloka'i was chosen as the best location.

In 1988 the plantation was further developed with a 1/2 acre experimental field, which later became the source of the seeds.
The soil was reclaimed and miles of irrigation lines were installed along with windbreaks of Wiliwili and Norfolk Island Pine trees.
The plantation sits in a micro-climate that is unique for its intense red volcanic soil, rich in minerals and the fields are surrounded by a 1.5 billion gallon reservoir, which serves the Kualapu'u and Ho'olehua agricultural plains.
At its peak, the plantation had a total of 600 acres under cultivation with 640,000 producing coffee trees.
Today there are well over 300 acres planted with 375,000 producing trees.

In 1993 the first commercial harvest was accomplished and the branding of Muleskinner - a natural dry, Malulani -a washed Arabica,
and Molokai Island Princess - vanilla infused - was established.

Between 2001 and 2003 another company managed the plantation and the fields were let go.

In 2004 Mike Atherton, Albert Boyce and a few other men from Manteca, California, purchased the non-operational coffee fields from Molokai Ranch and re-vitalized the gift shop and the espresso bar.
One of the owners, Mike Atherton, also owns Jesus Mountain Coffee Plantation in Nicaragua with 1,000 coffee acres under cultivation.
Coffee is not a hobby for these owners, it's their passion.

In 2014 the plantation was sold to a Hawaiian candie company.
